5 New Years Resolutions Every FM Should Consider

As we start a fresh New Year, facilities managers (FMs) are presented with the perfect opportunity to reflect on the past and set goals for improvement. In the ever-evolving field of facility management, staying proactive and embracing innovation is crucial. Here are 5 New Year’s resolutions that every Facilities Manager should consider enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and overall success in managing their facilities.

  1. Embrace Sustainable Practices- In the wake of growing environmental concerns, FMs should make a resolution to implement sustainable practices within their facilities. This could involve energy-efficient technologies, waste reduction initiatives, and eco-friendly materials and suppliers. By adopting green practices, FMs not only contribute to a healthier planet but also potentially save on operational costs in the long run.

  1. Review the maintenance process- Have you been using the same process for years because “that’s how you do things”. A lot of companies create budgets and reviews these several times a year, but why not their actual operational process? Analyse your current process, gain feedback from key stakeholders,

and determine how you can approve overall.

  1. Invest in your team- Studies show it’s 50% more expensive to retain talent than acquire talent. Your team are the backbone of your department so don’t neglect them! Invest in career development activities to make them more equipped for any challenges they may face. Why not offer bonuses and incentives to keep moral high.

  1. Work Smarter, Not Harder- We all know Facilities/ maintenance is stressful. Analyse your departments time, what does a typical day look like, what is being done, how much time does each activity take? Once you have this information you can then look to streamline your process and come up with innovative ways to reduce the time taken on tasks.

For example, Jemma spends 60% of her time answering calls, troubleshooting and instructing/ chasing contractors. Why not implement a Facility Management system which could automate most of this process.

  1. Explore New Tech- Keep an eye out for new technologies within the industry and be open to conversations with these companies. Even if it’s just to pick their brains. You may be surprised about how much these technologies could help. System such as CAFM software, BMS Systems, IoT Devices, BIM and more.

Now is the perfect time to make a list of your resolutions. Set timescales and reminders so you don’t forget. Don’t be one of those who makes the list and never follows through. Just remember, the resolutions you set will benefit you, so try not to neglect these or push them back another year!
